These large crowns are made of copper-nickel and do not carry much value. In fully uncirculated condition they may retail for $5 US dollars or so. Nice coin, nevertheless. An interested reader named Tim submits this for your consideration: The 1965 Churchill coin came in 2 versions like the Charles and Diana coin. There were 9 million of the normal coin struck and they are pretty worthless. However, the VIP version has a rainbow type shine in the metal compared to the dull normal coin. There were only 1000 VIP coins struck, and the last time I heard they were said to be worth £1000 each. Ever since 1951, British crowns have been made of copper nickel. None of these coins are valuable, even going back to 1937 when a silver crown was produced with low value. Now, if your crown is dated before 1937, that's another story! And was the best method for cleaning them. You can't. The so-called VIP coins have a 'rainbow type shine' on the surfaces, whatever that means. A trained specialist, no doubt, can tell by doing an in-person inspection. If you have a coin in a reliable holder (e.g., a PCGS or NGC holder), then the holder will indicate VIP status. Otherwise, layman cannot tell easily. We have had several requests to identify such coins using Internet pictures, and it is impossible to do so. All this is a ploy by the Royal Mint for making money. Cleaning coins, in general, is not recommended because it reduces value. If you must clean, use mild soap and hot water, nothing stronger. - CoinQuest (Paul) I have a 1965 sir Winston Churchill coin in plastic casing what is it worth today in Canadian dollars Value is shown in the second sentence of this page. 1 x Churchill Crown. Following the death of Sir Winston Leonard Spencer Churchill, in 1965, a commemorative crown was issued in his honour and memory. Obverse: The first (young) portrait of the Queen facing right, designed by Mary Gillick. ELIZABETH II DEI GRATIA REGINA F D 1965. Reverse: A sombre-looking portrait of Sir Winston Churchill, in a siren suit. The Churchill commemorative crown coin was announced on 16 March 1965, just seven weeks after Churchill's death. Only four commemorative coins had previously been issued in the UK and this would be the first to feature the head of a commoner on the same coin as monarch. Mary Gillick's portrait of HM the Queen on the obverse would be the same as that on all the coinage issued since 1953, but the reverse design would be specially commissioned from Churchill's favourite sculptor, Oscar Nemon. The Royal Proclamation authorising the design of the coin was signed by the Queen on 3 August 1965. Lady Churchill started the coining press at the Royal Mint in September and was presented with the first Churchill crown to be struck. Later the Queen visited the Royal Mint and struck a further example of the coin which was also presented to Lady Churchill. Distribution of the coins began on 11 October 1965 and production continued until the summer of 1966 to satisfy demand. The Churchill crown does not carry a statement of its face value but continues to be legal tender and is worth, as it has always been, just five shillings or twenty-five pence. To add value jewellers and enamellers have plated Churchill crowns with silver or gold and mounted them on such objects as trinket boxes, pin trays, pendants and belt buckles. 1 x Churchill Crown.
